Rough water Sunday

Another fun day in the water yesterday, but today I am sore! Heading north was a fight, coming back was a cruise. Thanks to Mary Robinson for using her sniper camera from her deck and snapping Wendy, Peter, Amy and me. What a great workout that was at Dilworth.

A woman's work....

When I first saw this study published in the NY Times, I came away with a couple thoughts:
In more financially depressed areas, you see a larger proportion of women in the workforce. That's not to say these women are making a living wage, or are laterally compensated with their male colleagues in any given job, rather they ARE out there working. On Vashon, we fall into the "above average" proportion of working women. That doesn't come as a surprise.

I bow down to all of you ladies out there making your own way, on your own terms. With the cost of childcare, low wages and a seemingly uphill battle for the poor and middle classes, it seems like little has changed in many years and women default to being stay-at-homes by circumstance more than will. Those who do well in the workforce have to fight for for what they have, squeak a lot for what's fair, or endure being called a "bitch" when they get theirs. You, go!

(Open Water) swimming is the best medicine

Yesterday I spent an hour 100% in the present. Do you have any idea how difficult that can be? With so much happening around me: happiness, sadness, deadlines, turmoil, uncertainty, family illness, there is no better relief than going into the liquid netherworld.

These ladies. This place. It is magic. You think only about the next breath, the sights on the ocean floor, the current surrounding you, the cold and numbing. We howl upon entering and get moving. I spy the house and pine out of the corner of my steaming goggle lens, feel the resistance of the neoprene wet suit with each outstretched arm. Swim past a faint jellyfish glow. See opportunity in the big crab one could probably dive down and fetch with a bare hand (gotta keep moving, it's damn chilly in these waters). I notice the resurgence of the sea stars just beneath. I think, swim to that point....getting closer....closer....breathe, pull, reach, be sleek, hold the water, move with grace, go the distance.

There is such joy in the accomplishment of these swims, but moreover that spell cast on me in that present-tense state is like nothing else I've encountered. It is the best medicine.

Oxymoron of the day: "High Energy Zumba"

Seen in the Vashon Athletic Club locker room this weekend.
Because if you've ever taken a Zumba class, when is this class NOT in turbo bootie mode?!
Cmon! I pity the fool comin' out of this version if regular Zumba doesn't cut it for you.
